To Impress or Inspire That is the Question

In a training I attended some years back, the facilitator stated the following: “Sometimes you really have to dent some helmets to get things done — it really makes an impression.”  Leaders certainly have to choose the tack they will take with their teams — to impress or to inspire.

Impression………………….Inspiration
Yelling……………….Cheering
Ordered to follow………………..Opportunity to lead
About you……………….About them
Command and control……….Nurture and grow
Tactics………………Tactile
Force………………Flow
Divides……………..Unites
Limits……………..Frees
Obedience…………..Loyalty
Manages………….Leads
Enervates………………Energizes
Supervision…………..Coaching
Symptoms……………Systems

It can be argued that both mindsets can produce results, the variance may be found in whether the results are short-term or long-term.

In March 2009, leadership consultant John Baldoni wrote a great blog post titled Wanted: Inspirational Leaders in which he states, “leaders who can inspire others to achieve are a rare breed.”  They may be rare, but let’s certainly hope they are “breeding”.

What is your leadership approach?  What would your team say?  Is your organization achieving the results it needs to or the results it’s capable of?
